Vivarium Naturals Bio-Thrive Millipede & Isopod Substrate
Build your enclosure around what your animals actually need. Vivarium Naturals Bio-Thrive Millipede & Isopod Substrate combines calcium-infused hardwood oak pulp, sphagnum moss, tree fern fiber, and a handcrafted bioactive boost to create a nutrient-rich foundation for feeding, burrowing, and moisture management.
For millipedes and isopods, substrate is more than something to stand on. It is part of their habitat—and part of their diet. Bio-Thrive puts that relationship at the center of its formula, providing hardwood-based organic material alongside ingredients that help maintain the damp, sheltered conditions these animals depend on.
Bio-Thrive is formulated specifically for millipedes, also works great fr isopods and contains no coco coir or topsoil.
A Substrate That Supports Feeding and Burrowing
Millipedes and isopods consume decomposing organic matter as they move through their environment. A suitable substrate helps support that natural feeding activity while providing space to burrow, shelter, and retreat beneath the surface.
Bio-Thrive’s calcium infused hardwood oak pulp forms a food-rich foundation for the enclosure. Combined with moisture-retaining moss and fibrous material, it creates a naturalistic and nutritious substrate for millipede enclosures, isopod breeding tubs.
What Makes Bio-Thrive Different?

Bio-Thrive for Millipedes
A millipede’s substrate is central to its care. It provides feeding material, holds moisture, and creates the underground space used for burrowing and molting.
Moisten Bio-Thrive until it is evenly damp, without becoming saturated or waterlogged. Provide a generous substrate depth appropriate for your species; a common starting point is a depth at least equal to the millipede’s body length.
Add decomposing hardwood and aged hardwood leaf litter for additional feeding material and surface cover. Check the substrate regularly and replenish it as your millipedes consume and process it. Replace spent material when it becomes heavily depleted or dominated by waste pellets.
The substrate feeds the millipede. Supplemental foods add variety to that foundation.
Note on Flake Soil:
Flake soil is not necessary for millipedes, this product was formulated for beetle larvae, it will work for millipedes, however it is HUGELY unnecessary and extremely expensive.
If you insist on using flake soil - Beware of inexpensive "flake soil" aka "fake soil" misrepresented as the man made fermented product that is not fermented, it takes a very long time to ferment, hence the high price. One bag of legit flake soil runs around $45 to $60.00 for a 5 qt. bag, so buyer beware.
Flake soil is not necessary if you have access to quality Rotten Hardwood - The Defiant Forest ALWAYS offers High Quality Rotted Hardwood for Millipedes in 5 different sizes - Large Rotted Logs, Medium Rotted logs, Rotted Chunks, Rotted Course Grind, and Rotted Fine Grind.
As Americas Largest Millipede Breeder Direct Retailer - The Defiant Forest is living proof that flake soil is unnecessary for keeping, breeding, or raising baby millipedes.
We use Vivarium Naturals Bio-Thrive Millipede Substrate for all our breeding stock, and all babies we raise in our facility. All you need is good quality rotten hardwood and hardwood leaves coupled with Bio-Thrive Millipede substrate.
Bio-Thrive for Isopods
Bio-Thrive provides a nutrient-rich base for isopod colonies, combining organic feeding material with moisture retention and sheltered space below the surface.
Start with approximately 2–3 inches of substrate, adjusting the depth to your species and enclosure. Moisten part of the enclosure and maintain a moisture gradient so your isopods can choose between damper and drier areas.
Top the substrate with aged hardwood leaves, bark, and a patch of moss. Replenish leaf litter as it is consumed, provide appropriate supplemental foods, and adjust ventilation and moisture to your colony’s needs.
A Strong Foundation for Your Next Enclosure
Whether you are setting up your first millipede habitat or maintaining established isopod colonies, start with a substrate developed for the animals living in it.
Choose Vivarium Naturals Bio-Thrive for a hardwood-based, nutrient-rich millipede and isopod substrate—without coco coir or topsoil.
